Audiovisual over IP (AV over IP)

Video over IP is a part of AV over IP, which refers to transmission of audiovisual information—via data packets from content source to content output—over an Internet Protocol (IP) based network.

With growth in demand and ubiquity of audio-visual applications across virtually all industries, AV over IP has become a hot topic for business leaders, and is projected to be the future of audiovisual technology. How AV technology works

In order to understand why AV-over-IP has become the desired framework for corporate display applications, it is important to understand its fundamental components, and how they differ from predating systems.


Standard AV over IP system:

Back-end PC/Server administers network devices and processing, namely: data traffic, media sources, administrative access, and firewall security. The server is equipped with a Network Interface Card (NIC) and a suitable Graphics Card. Another PC/Server can be added for failover.


Network Management Software for accessing or monitoring devices, optimizing use of hardware, and managing content—locally or remotely. As networks scale in size or complexity, so does the need for such centralized management.


Network devices in compliance with Internet Protocol (IP) that may include:

Switches or hubs for bridging, splitting, and forwarding data

Routers for connecting networks—LAN, WAN, or Internet

Cabling—usually twisted pair cabling (Cat 5 and above) and HDMI


The internet is rapidly consolidating network processing through wireless LAN (WLAN) or cloud computing. This allows PC/Servers to be moved offsite, or even built into smart devices.

Video outputs such as LED or LCD digital display screens with standard HDMI/VGA ports. The devices often have inbuilt audio outputs or can integrate external speakers.

This way, all network devices can be controlled through network capabilities.


Devices on the network are assigned IP addresses for identification and location definition, in conjunction with unique identifiers (UIDs) such as serial numbers and URLs.
